More than 100,000 migrant workers stuck in Guangzhou’s main railway station in the south of China during journey home for Chinese new year on Monday.
Poor weather left at least 100,000 travellers stranded in a train station as they battled to return home ahead of Chinese New Year celebrations next week.

However, a bout of freezing weather and snow across eastern and central China saw at least 23 trains delayed, leaving many trapped in and around the station, The Guardian reported.
“There are too many people and it is too crowded,” one stranded passenger, who was not named, told state broadcaster CCTV.

Aerial photographs published by one website showed about 176,000 passengers had been due to pass through the station on Monday alone, and deployed more than 2,600 security guards were deployed to handle the crowds, many of whom were heading back to rural areas of the country from factories in the Guangzhou area. VIA theguardian.

The 40-day New Year travel rush - which began in late January and is often described as the greatest annual human migration on earth is expected to see Chinese people travel home to their families for New Year or to other holiday destinations  an estimated 2.9 billion journeys are made.

Many of those on the move are migrant workers returning from factories in China’s manufacturing heartlands, in the region around Guangzhou, to their homes in the rural interior.
